One of the oldest places to get links from are directories.
While these links have lost some power and juice over the last few years, they are still effective for links as well as indexing. These types of links should not be the bulk of your link building, but they are still useful.
Remember it’s best to have a good mix of links from various different sources and directories are a good place to get them from.
So what are online directories?
Simple. These are places where you can share your site with the world and at the same time grab some links from it.
Basically, how online directories work is you list your site, give a nice site description and then you get a listing with them and therefore a backlink to your site.
I’ll demonstrate below how to sign up with a directory.
I am using somuch.com for this demo.
A). Read the guidelines
B). Check the box
C). Select the free option
D). Click continue
Next, you’ll be at a submission style page.
A). Add your URL
B). Put in a title
C). Select category
D). Select sub-category
E). Input your email address
F). Input a description of your site
G). Click submit
You’ll come to a thank you screen after this.
Certain directories may make you click and verify a link they send to your email as well.
But, congrats, you just submitted your site to a directory!
The Only Problems With Directory Submissions
- They are time consuming to do
- It takes time to signup for each directory and submit your site
- It also can take several weeks to several months to have free directory submissions approved
You can use tools or services to automate your submission progress.
Automating Directory Submission (optional)
There are a couple of great ways to save time and probably frustration when submitting to directories.
Option #1: Pay Rank Crew To Do it
This is my current favorite option for 3 reasons:
#1. It’s easy
#2. It’s cheap
#3. Saves me a lot of work
First, you can get a free rank crew account here.
Here is a little walk through how to use Rank Crew for web directories.
You just select the package you want to order and click.
Next, fill out the form.
- Hot Tip: Add as many titles as you can think of. If you can think of 50 different titles, use them.
- Hot Tip 2: Add as many keywords based on your niche as you can as well.
Using both of those hot tips above you’ll insure that you’ll have a fantastic search engine boost as they become active.
After you’ve submitted your website it could take a while before they all become active but web directories are important to help get your website ranked.
If you get stuck during the submission process they even have a video right there in your account to walk you through.
Option #2: Use Keyword Canine
It’s not just a keyword tool you can also do what is called a “Boost” and this boost will allow you to submit your website to 100 directories.
This is a nice feature to go along with the keyword tool.
Here’s where to find boost at.
First, log into your Keyword Canine account here.
At the top of your account you’ll see a nav bar.
A). Click boost and follow the instructions on the screen and the team will submit your website to the directories for you.
The rest of the submission process is the same as submitting to a directory, but instead you are submitted to 100 while only inputting your stats once.
The 2 above options will help you save time but are strictly optional.
Below is a good list of free directories.

Free Directories List
dmoz.org (One of the top – has lost some power recently and take’s awhile to get approved. Read their rules., it will save you time.
somuch.com – The one I demo’ed above.
This is just a few and I’ll be adding more to it over time.
Action: Signup for about 20-30 directories of your choice. Use a different title and description for every single listing. Yes, I said a different title and description for every single listing.
Keep in mind many of these will not get approved right away and some may take several months.
